Neill was born Sept. 26, 1921, to Reuben and Jessie Heusinkveld in Forestville Township, Fillmore County. He grew up in rural Spring Valley and graduated from The Stone School in 1936. Neill farmed with his father until 1942, when he entered the Navy during WWII. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Manila Bay and served in the South Sea until being discharged in 1946. Neill returned to Rochester, where he married Hilda Wilkin, of Corbridge On Tyne, England, on Aug. 1, 1947. They raised their three sons in Rochester. Neill was a member of Evangel United Methodist Church and was an active member of the church choir. He also was an active member of the Rochester Male Chorus for 58 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 92 in Rochester for 60 years. Neill is survived by three sons, Craig of White Bear Lake, Minn., Bradd of Rochester and Kent (Lisa) of Stewartville; two brothers, Cleon of Spring Valley and Douglas of Rushmore, Minn.; one sister, Glenice of Spring Valley; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Neill was preceded in death by his wife in 1990; his parents; and his longtime companion, Lil Siple, in 2008.
