Urban Harken graduated from the Ackley High School in 1927. He was theathlete in the family and played baseball with the Ackley town team whilein high school and college. As a youth Urban worked for Enno Harkenduring the summer. He was also the early riser and always chose themorning chores, if there was a choice. He spent one of his collegesummers driving a Dubuque family to the east coast. He graduated fromthe University of Dubuque in 1931 and received his Master's de Gree fromthe University of Iowa in 1938. He started teaching at a salary of$90.00 per month. Small towns were so strict with teachers that he hadto smoke in the basement of his home. Urban was principal, dean anddestined to be Superintendent of the Burlington, Iowa schools until hedeveloped multiple Sclerosis. He was well known figure in the IowaEducational field, had principal of Horace Mann Junior High School from1941-1943, then principal of the Burlington Senior High School from 1943- 1953. He was administrative assistant to the superintendent from1953-1954 . This(multiple sclerosis ) along with his diabetes took theirphysical effects on Urban. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1956 at ahospital in Burlington, Iowa and is buried in the Westfriesland Cemetery.
Louise also was an educator, teacher, and principal in the elementarydepartment of the Burlington school system. She has been active in thePresbyterian church there and held various church offices. She is activein retired teachers, participated in elder hostels, and enjoyed travelingin her retirement years.
