  Hij ging in 1928 als vrijgezel naar Canada, maar keerde in december 1929 terug. In maart 1930 trouwde hij met Hiltje en dezelfde maand gingen zij weer naar Canada. Daar bleven ze maar kort, ze keerden weer terug. Daar heeft hij korte tijd geboerd, om daarna in De Tike een winkel te beginnen, waar hij levensverzekeringen verkocht.

  Meine was een positief ingestelde man. Hij hield van het houden van voordrachten en van sport. Hij was toegewijd christen, geliefd bij iedereen en altijd bezig met kerkelijke activiteiten.

  It was in May of the year 1948 that we immigrated to Canada. The reason that we did
  make the decision was that there was not much future in Holland for our children.
  We were brought up in a way, so pray about it, and then was confirmed that after an
  examination in The Haag, the papers were signed for our departure.
  The seventh of May. That day William Paulusma with the big car did look after us, and
  early in the morning that day we arrived in Rotterdam. When you know our boys,
  you can understand how excited they were, as was as the children of Israel did travel
  to the Promised Land.
  Our boat the MS Kota Inten would be heading for Quebec, Canada. I never forgot the
  after they pulled in the anchor, that the boat did make room, between Holland and
  the land, slowly Holland become smaller, till the time it disappeared, and around us
  we just saw the waters of the big ocean, and at that time we settled in our cabins.
  Not long after that, some of us did not feel too good, and it turned out seasick. I think I
  was of our family who was not sick. That sickness what appeared stomach trouble
  lasted till the time that we saw a little speck far ahead in the sea. This reminds me of
  the servant of Elisha, the time he came back with the message that he saw a little
  cloud as a man’s hand. That little dark spot which we saw turned out to be Canada.
  You can imagine how the people did feel, they shouted for joy, and the sickness was
  gone.
  So far as I know we did arrive in the sea port of Quebec City May the 18 th 1948. I
  remember some people did do some shopping in time what was yet left before we
  could go in the train. In the store we did know nothing about the value of the
  products, the same with how much change we could get back. When the store
  keeper would cheat us we never would find out, and on the other hand, we also
  could not talk English. This reminds me the time we were on the ocean, one person,
  did have a look at the waters, someone said, “what do you see,” he said “what do you
  see on the sea”.
  
  After the baggage was all transferred to the trains, the sign was given to step in. In the
  train we wasted no time to look through the windows what kind of land in Canada
  was. The farmers had started already to work up their land.
  The next day May the 19the we celebrated our Allen’s birthday. I don’t know how we
  did that, in the bible we read, the time that Israel did conquer the land, that Caleb
  said: “the one who will conquer Kirtath-sepher, him will I give my daughter as his
  wife”, and this was Othniel. Allan was that time so young yet for such a present, he
  just turned 16 year, later on he could look after himself for such a deal.
  Now we go back to our journey. It took us about three days traveling before we could
  leave the train. I remember during those 3 days the train did stop once a while, and
  some time the people could go out for a little fresh air, and you should hear him
  talking most Dutch and sometimes funny expression in the English, when we would of
  like to talk to a Canadian, you could hear all over
  “ja ja I forstean (understand) you”, really they understood nothing at all.
  We arrived with the train in Goderich about noon time. Our farmer Bill Ellerington and
  Tom Ellerington stand already there, with 2 nice cars, they did look very friendly to
  us. First thing what they did, they took us down to a restaurant for dinner. After Bill
  had asked the blessing, we did have a wonderful meal, and we always have been
  thankful, that they did receive us with such a loving spirit. We were thankful to the
  Lord, that our future did look very bright.
  After dinner we step in the car of the Ellerington brother, and after about one hour we
  arrived beside no 4 of Ellerington farm, this was a big house what later turns ours, all
  according to God’s plan. Bill Ellerington said, he did have only one name and this was
  Bill, in Holland always the last name was mentioned.
  Because we did have a family with 7 children we needed much milk. You know what Bill
  did, he gave us a cow, which we could use for then milk, really he gave us a double
  portion, that remind me on the story of Joseph in the bible, before the time Joseph
  had him made known to his brethren, he set up one great meal for them but he gave
  Benjamin 5 times so much.
  
  We did say stay at the Ellerington farm for 2 years, with real satisfaction, after I bought
  a farm for our own family in Lucan. Before we did go to Canada, we first had to fill in
  a form, with different questions. I know we did prefer to go to a place who was a
  Christian community of our own Church but the Lord did have other plans for us. I
  remember our first Sunday in Canada we just did wander in the field, as sheep
  without a shepherd, no Church life anymore, no fellowship. The bible said seek ye
  first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all other things shall be added
  unto you. Before the next Sunday mom (Hilda) said to me, we can start Church in our
  own house with our family, so we did.
  For that first Sunday service I had chosen a text taken from Psalm 126:5 and 6. We
  know Israel had been in exile for 70 years. This psalm is a praise song. It starts when
  the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion we were like them that dream. With this
  song did Israel go to Gods sanctuary in Zion. And in this psalm, gave the people
  thanks to God for the freedom after 70 years in Babel. God had his people so
  wonderful comforted, that even the healer was touch by it.
  After our first Sunday service in Canada soon other Dutch people did hear about it. So
  sometime 50 or more people came to our house for worship and I still can remember
  some names beside our on family of 9. The people who came there faithfully were
  the 2 Beiman brothers with their families, also the Imanse family, and Brand Bylsma 7
  or 8 children, the family of G Brommer and Jim Lanting, R. Westdorp, J. Westerhof. I
  remember also the first Christmas Concert celebrated at our home in 1948. At last
  there came so many people, that we rented a bus to pick up the people, and drove to
  Clinton, where we could hold service in the Presbyterian Church, we did not have to
  pay. Gradually emigrants came to our area, and it was not long as there were
  Churches in Exeter, 1 in Clinton, Goderich, Listowel, I think in Blyth, yes God’s Word
  still stands and should, “my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts than
  your thoughts.”
