Some records state he died in Nansemond, Va others say Chowan County. The will was probated in Chowan County - which could imply the death occurred there or in neighbouring Perquimans Co.
Perquimans county was formed from Albemarle in 1668. Albemarle was the Original County, abolished in 1739.

1748 July Ct. Chowan Co. Will dated 1 Dec 1746:
THOMAS ROWNTREE, "aged and weak of body".
Son CHARLES - land where he now lives joining broad Neck Branch, Catteren Creek Swamp; also 50 acres in Perquimmons co. from a deed for 200 acres purchased from Joseph Jessop dec'd calle Grape Tree Ridge.
Son THOMAS - rest of my land in Chowan Co. with the plantation where I now live after my wife Elizabeth's widowhood; also 50 acres from the Jessop purchase & 50 acres called Hickory Ridge.
Grandson WILLIAM WALLIS - land where he now lives in Perquimans Co; 50 acres from the Jessop.
Grandson THOMAS ROWNTREE, son of CHARLES & his wife JUDITH - plantation where my negro man Jack now lives in Perquimans Co.
Executors to "gitt" my entry joining William Hollowell & then to divide it between my grandson WILLIAM WALLIS & my GRANDSON, the son of THOMAS ROWNTREE & his wife MARY
Son-in-law ELIAS STALLINGS - 166 acres, & my daughter ELIZABETH STALLINGS, now dec'd has had her full part of my personal estate & it to go to her children Jacob, Elias, John and Elizabeth Stallings.
Wife: Elizabeth - use of land where I now live. Overseer of will is to be friend Capt. John Sumner of Chowan Co.

THOMAS ROUNTREE SEN of Chowan, for "love I bear towards my gr-son William Wallis of Perq. have given plant' whereon I now live 50a. which said Rountree had of Timothy Clare lat of Perq." provided said Wallis does not sell any part of said land without consent of my sons, Charles, & Thomas Rountree. "

There are a Susannah, Christian, Moses, John and Jesse mentioned in the will of Francis Rowntree (Thomas' Father) dated 30 Sep 1730 (no probate).
