This is only part of John "Jacob" Spaw's pension file. I have paper copies of these pages that I made at the National Archives. The page numbers are for my reference only. From what I've read here John "Jacob" Spaw and his brother James, Jacob's wife Eliza and possibly James's wife as well, lived (possibly born) in Pulaski Co., KY. Jacob and I believe James as well, served in A Co 1st KY Cav Vol during the Civil War then moved near Winslow, Pike Co., IN. I have not done any more research on Jacob and his brother, as this is not my direct line.

Deposition A
Case of Eliza Spaw, No. 762.082
On this 23" day of Sept., 1903 at Near Augusta, County of Pike State of Ind, before me, EBLarcy(?) a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Eliza Spaw (Claimant), who , being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:
I am 55 years of age; my post-office address is Winslow, Pike Co, Ind.
I am the widow of Jacob Spaw who served in Co "A" 1" Ky Vol Cav during the Civil War, and who drew a pension up to his death on this service. his was the only service he was ever in.
He died April 8, 1902, here in this house.
He was taken down March 26, 1902, with aching in his stomach and bowels and one side, which I don't recall, the next morning after he was teken down he began hiccoughing, and continued to until his death. This caused him great misery, and seemed to rack his whole body. The first morning when these hiccoughs began, he said he chould hardly stand the pain caused by this hiccoughing, and that he never would get well.
He had suffered from laryngits as long as I knew him and very little could he talk seemed to suffer in his throat and lungs, and he had ? cold when he went to ? and complained of beings so sore(?) he cold barely move when he was first taken.
He had ? for the first three or four days, when the doctor preceded in checking it, but his hiccoughing continued to his death, and towards the last his bowels gave him a great deal of pain.
I had two doctors with the solider during the last sickness, Dr. Nathan Corn, and Dr. Thos McGlassan(?), and if it wasn't for this hiccoughing which was caused by his stomach trouble he would get well right away,
that they couldn't control that, Dr Corn was the regular physician, he stayed here six nights, Dr.McGlasson(?) was called in only a time or two.
The solider suffered considerably from his stomach trouble from the time of marriag. Many a time just after our marriage did he walk the floor at night after eating supper try to digest it, and he had this trouble all the time up to his death.
For a day a two before his death the Solider suffered considerable pain in his bowels, and had frequent desire to ? his them, but upon attempting to couldn't pass anything, and then just about thelast he ran off at the bowels a time or two, passing blood, he was unconscious about a day and a night before death.
He had a dry cough for the first hrs of the days of his sickenss, but it then checked. He never did spit up much phegn* not much more than usual. He had suffered from servere hiccough for some years - just too or three severe ones at a time. He thought it was pepper in his food that caused them, I used to give him black pepper and mustards(??) and salt beat up together for the pain he would suffer with in his stomach and bowels, and he used to think this pepper would cause him to hiccough for awhile too.
I married the soldier about Nov 7, 1869, in Pulaski Co., KY. My maiden name was Eliza Stroud. Neither he nor I had been married before. We were ? only about eight miles apart, but first became personally acquainted about the start(?) of the war.
We been never divorced but lived together up to his death, & I have not remarried. We had only two children, both of whom died before he did.
John H. McConnell, of Winslow, Ind is my attorney, I have no agreement with him as to his fee. I just left that to him to charge what the law allows. I have not paid him any fee for ? this claim, nor any one else. No I don't wish to be present at the taking of the testimony during this investigation, and were further notice of the examination. No Dr. Corn was not present when the soldier died. He was called away to attend his daughter, the day before soldier died, and left word for me to send for Dr.McGlasson (?) if he got worse. Dr. McGlaso had been to see him a couple of times before during this last sickness, and then he was here the evening before soldier died the next morning at eight oclock.
The soldier's frull name was John Jacob Spaw, but he never liked the name "John Jacob", and always went by the name of Jacob Spaw.
I have heard the above read and my answers are correty recorded, I didn't mean to say the colds he took ever settled on his lungs . The doctor always said his lungs were "good". He came of a strange lunged(??) family, and never seemed to have any trouble with his lungs, the colds would seem to settle in his throat.

Post Office:- Winslow, Pike County, Ind.
Act of july 14, 1862

Evansville, Ind. Sept. 26, 1903

Hon. Commissioner of Pensions,
Washington, D.C.
Sir:
I have the honor to return herewith the papers in the above entitled claim, and to submit my report theron. The papers came to the field for investigation to determine the clinical history of the solider's last sickness; to me for the initial examination. The claimant was served with the usual notice, and her rights explained to her. She did not elect to be present at the taking of the testimony, and waived further notice.
This claimant, as well as the solider, bear excellent reputations in every respect, and she impressed me as being an unusually conscientious woman. Dr. corn is of good repute, and was once a member of the Examining Board for Pike County, Ind. He seemed frank in his statement, as did Dr. McGlasson. I have had occasion to cross-examine Dr McGlason before, and found him reliable. He bears a good reputation and seems to be a man of good education.
It is believed that real history of the solider's last sickness is fully set forth in the testimony herewith, and I deemed it unnecessary to secure that of lay witnesses who were with the solider during that period.
Reference to the Board of Review is recommended.
Very Respectfully,
E.B. Lacy(?)
Special Examiner
