Dr. Lamar H. Ochs, M.D., 90, of Belleville IL, born July 15, 1919, in Lebanon, IL, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, at Manor Grove in Kirkwood, MO.
Mr. Ochs was a 1937 graduate of Lebanon Community High School and was awarded a B.A. degree at Washington University of St. Louis in 1941. He graduated from Washington University in 1944 with a doctorate degree. After an internship at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis, he entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where he served out of the 88th Station Hospital at Taejon, Korea.
Lamar was a resident in internal medicine at Southwestern Medical College of the University of Texas from 1948 to 1951. After two years as a full time instructor in medicine at Lisbon Hospital of the Southwestern Medical College at the University of Texas, he was certified a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a fellow and past governor of the American College of Augiology, and fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Ochs served as a staff member of both St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and Memorial Hospital in Belleville and as a consultant at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese and at Sparta Community Hospital. He was the founder of the cardiology unit at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. He was an instructor in medicine at Washington University School of Medicine from 1955 to 1978 and a clinical associate professor of Medicine at Southern Illinois University. Dr. Ochs had an office in Belleville, IL, for the practice of internal medicine and cardiology from 1953 to 1987. He also served on the board of directors of the Illinois Heart Association from 1971 to 1977.
Lamar was preceded in death by his wife of 63 wonderful years, Frances Mary, nee Kyle, Ochs, whom he married December 28, 1942, and who died January 10, 2006; and his parents, Harry Benjamin and Margaret, nee Herman, Ochs.
Surviving are his three children, Lamar K. Ochs of Chesterfield, MO, Connie O. Whitney of Destin, FL, and Lynda Ann Ochs of Belleville, IL; and five grandchildren, James Rothenbuecher, Preston Whitney, Kyle Whitney, Moriah Kardas, and Tyler Ochs.
