James Beggs |
Annie Garner Miller Beggs
Birth: Feb., 1800
Death: Feb. 8, 1885
Anny was 70 years old when she walked almost all the way from Green County, Alabama to Texas with her daughter Betsy and her husband James Alexander Geddie. Anny could speak a language other than English, probably an Irish-English dialect or Gaelic. Just previous to her death, she was a mother to her grandchilren, in as much as James W. Beggs wife had passed away in 1879,leaving nine children of her own as well of two of Robert Beggs children,Josie and Rob. Annie Miller took care of them all, assuming most of the responsibility for their welfare. She is buried between the graves of her daughter, Lucinda, and her son James Washington Beggs, a long way from that spot on the wide ocean upon which she was born en route to the frontier county that was Alabama when she arrived as an infant. She was a remarkable person, and the Geddies who are decended from Anny Miller Beggs may be well proud of the heritage which she passed down. (From Geddie-McPhail Book by Jack Geddie)
On March 25 1855, Mrs. Ann Beggs came before the session (of the Elizabeth Presbyterian Church in Sumter County, Alabama) with her letter of dismissal from Bethsalam Church, and gave satisfactory evidence of religious experience, and was admitted to full communion in this Church. The minutes of the church also show when Ann Beggs, her son, James W.,his wife and others received letters of dismissal Nov 5 1870 because they left for Texas. (from article, Beggs, Ann Miller F53, Van Zandt County Histories and Bigraphies, article written by Carol Baskin Tatum.)
