Arnold Joost van Keppel, 1st Earl of Albemarle (1669-1718), General
Sitter in 5 portraits
Albemarle was a Dutch-born courtier who came to England as a page to William IIIin 1688. The King granted him and earldom and Irish lands in 1696, much to the disgust of Parliament, where William's generosity to his Dutch favourites was resented. He remained a particular friend of the King, and on William's death returned to Holland to pursue a military career. He was known as a cheerful and generous man.

508 Knight of the Garter - 1700
BIOGRAPHY
Belonging to an old Dutch family, he attended the Prince of Orange and went to England as a page of honour. In 1691 he caught William III's attention when he broke his leg in a hunting accident. 'That is such a good lad, he withstood terrible pain,' William III observed. Consequently he was made Groom of the Bedchamber 1691-1695 and Master of the Robes 1695-1697.
By 1695 Keppel had replaced Bentinck in William III's favour, his good looks creating rumours of a homosexual affair. But this seems unlikely as William III was not highly sexed and Keppel was rampantly heterosexual to the point of being described as randy. In 1696 William III created him Earl of Albemarle. This was resented by Hans Willem Bentinck and caused the two to quarrel. After 1697, when Bentinck spent most of his time abroad on embassies, Albemarle reigned supreme, at least so far as William III would allow him as he used Albemarle as a confidential personal assistant.
He received 108,634 acres of land in Ireland and in 1697 became a Major-General, and Knight of the Garter in 1700. He was present at King William III's deathbed and was given the keys of the king's cabinet before the king died. As well, he was bequested 200,000 guilders in the will.
Retired to the Netherlands, Albemarle was appointed General of the Dutch forces. He was in command at Ramillies in 1706 and at Oudenaerde in 1708. At Denain in 1712 he was defeated and taken prisoner by the French. He died in The Hague in 1718 only forty-eight years of age.
