Throughout James and Malinda
s very short marriage, James was constantly travelling for work, but really it was the adventure he was chasing. He did it all: railroads, logging, swamp draining, and finally war. James wrote a letter to his mother Catherine from a Confederate army hospital about a year before he died. He was very ill and in poor spirit. He apologized for being so overbearing and felt sad that he missed his family and friends so. He wished that he hadn
t taken them all for granted and asked forgiveness. This was the letter of a man on the verge of death. After a long and slow recovery James lived to fight the greatest battle of his life. He and his ragged, starved cavalry marched to Vicksburg in 1862. He was never heard from again.
Catherine admitted in letters to Malinda after James' death that he was always her favorite. She never gave up hope that he would find his way home again. Crushed by the ruins of war, Malinda and her orphaned children were left poverty stricken. Her mother Julia Pernet Dull took them in to live on what was left of the family plantation.
Malinda never remarried. When her daughter Georgiana died in 1889, Malinda moved into her son-in-law's home, William Abraham O
Kelly, to care for her grandchildren. Malinda was well known in Monroe for her stories about the old days and spirited tales. By all accounts, she was a remarkable individual.
Malinda and James had two children: James Garrett b. Jan 14 1855 d. July 25 1884
unmarried railroad engineer who was killed in the falling of a bridge beneath his engine during R.R. construction. James seems to have been quite a loveable character and a lot like his father in his adventurous spirit. Georgiana b. Jan 18 1859 d. Feb 2 1889 m. William A O
