Ruth Kipp was born January 24, 1776 in New York (also in Westchester
Co. probably near Chappaqua, NY). Her parents were Caleb Carpenter
and Amey Carpenter. She died May 21, 1836 (Sparta, Ontario....same
observation as for John Kipp's records).
"The Quaker Settlement in Yarmouth Township, Elgin County, Ontario" by Karen-Lynn Stafford, 1987, University of Western Ontario, 156 p.
The author reports that at the Norwich Monthly Meeting held 14 Oct 1829 proceedings of disownment were taken against several women of the Yarmouth Preparatory Meeting (Yarmouth had gone to the Hicksites in the 1828 split within the Quaker faith). Among the disowned were "Ruth Kipp, wife of John".
More about John and Ruth, founders of Sparta, Ont. Zipporah
subsequently remarried her cousin, Caleb Carpenter, in a second
marriage for both, in a Quaker ceremony in Chappaqua, New York in 1796. Caleb and Zipporah were Quakers; James Kipp's parents had been Quakers. In addition, James had two brothers who, as Quakers, remained neutral during the Revolution. It is not surprising then, that when James and Zipporah's son, John, married Caleb's daughter, Ruth, that they retained their Quaker background. When John and Ruth moved to Canada, (probably after Zipporah's death in 1818--which dovetails nicely with the foundation of the Quaker community in 1819) they moved with other Westchester Quakers to the Quaker community of Sparta, Ontario. Since Canada was part of the New York Yearly Meeting of Quakers, the Kipps did not move outside the political sphere of their religious group. This may have seemed more important to them than the fact that they were emigrating to another country.
