In the Diary of Daniel Ayres (1790-1872) [now in the possession of Jim Hoe, 446 Newtown Turnpike, Weston, CT 06883] Daniel Ayres described his Strachan aunts as follows: "The children of her [Sarah Smith Ayres Strockem Devoe] second husband Strockem (four daughters) were 1. Janet Engle, 2. Peggy Kitchell, 3. Martha Montanye, and 4. Polly Minard, all of whom I remember as all worthy women with large families, averaging pretty well. No. 1 stand well in the English Neighborhood, N. Jersey; No. 2 pretty well; No. 3 married John J. Montanye. He was connected with Blackwell & McFarlan in the Union Furnace West side, Broadway, between Canal and Howard Streets. He left there and settled at Haverstraw, a farmer and Forge owner, the iron he made he sold to his old partners, B & McF; ; No. 4 moved to Sempronius, Oneida County, New York, then the far west and are now out of sight." [pages 250-251 of the diary].
[page 254] "John J. Montanye is alluded to on pages 250 and 251; he married my Father's half-sister Martha Strockem & their children [were] 3 sons and 5 daughters: no. Phebe, No. 2 Sarah, No. 3 Jeannette, No. 4 Nancy, No. 5 Martha.
"No. 1. was a sweet gentle Lady married to Walter Brewster, son of Saml. B., the latter NY senator. His son is a respectable man. W & Phebe Brewster both decd, leaving a daughter Delia, who married Mathrew Gurnee. He died in 1833, leaving 2 sons, Abm. and Walter. Delia Brewster Gurnee afterward married Saml. Knapp; they had a son & daughter, John Albert and Jeannette; Saml. Knapp died in 18--, surviving his wife Delia; Abm. Gurnee died Aug 1868; Walter married Miss Smith and is living on the old Saml. B. place at Haverstraw and one child, girl.
"No. 2 married ____Parkinson, died in Brooklyn in 1865 with her son-in-law.
"No. 3 married Col. Matthew D. Coe, removed to Romulus, Seneca County, thence to Chicago, Ill.
"No. 4 married John J. Suffern.
"No. 5 married Wm. Brewster, another son of Saml. B.; afterwards married ____ Gardner; now a widow residing at 151 West 67th Street; her son-in-law with her; Mrs. Gardner has a son also at Rockford, Illinois.
"Jeannette M. Coe, No. 3, left two daughters Delia and Mary, and Augustus who died in Va., aged 19. Delia is single residing at Romulus. She made us a pleasant call in 1868. I hope to see more of her; Mary Coe married Mr. Walter S. Gurnee; their children are Delia, Eveline, Fanny, Walter, Grace, Augustus, & Isabelle. Mr. W. S. Gurnee has a fine summer residence at Irvington, New Jersey, also No. 33 West 5th, N.Y. Here Eveline resides with her husband, Edward P. Scott. He is a banker, 22 Wm. St., N.Y. (Mr. W. S. Gurnee the Co.) Mrs. Gurnee & the children are in Europe & one son in Mr. Scott's office. Mr. G., leaving his family, is now here to return in spring 1870. Mr. WSG became wealthy at Chicago."
