The family MAILLART came from Beugnies, a village close to Felleries. Several members of the family were mayors during the 16th century. By the 17th century, despite the fact that the family had a lot of possessions in Beugnies, it seems that they were no longer represented. After the 17th century they were found in Felleries and in Beaufort. Some members of the family came to Felleries at the end of the 15th century after getting married. ; They were represented in Felleries at least till the French Revolution. Just as in Beugnies, several members of the family were mayors during the 16th, 17th, and even 18th century. The family seems to have been rich and during the 16th century its members married with other rich families from Felleries or Avesnes. Maillart can also be written Maillard.
Beugnies and Felleries are both small villages located near Avesnes. Both are closely linked with the history of Avesnes. Avesnes was a feudal possession belonging to the House of Bourgogne from 1436 to 1477. In 1477 Louis XI, king of France, destroyed the town. From 1477 to 1556 Avesnes belonged to Austria. Once during that time, in 1514, it was destroyed by fire. From 1556 to 1659, Avesnes was part of the Spanish Netherlands. Avesnes became part of France in 1659. During all these changes of overlords, there was a lot of war in the region and also some epidemics of the plague.
