All rights reserved Alexander, Sir William,Earl ofStirling (1567?-1640), Scottish poet and courtier, born probably in Menstrie, and educated probably at the universities of Glasgow and Leiden.He was tutor to the oldest son of James VI of Scotland (later James I of England). Alexander became secretary of state for Scotland in 1626. His principal works include the collection of sonnets Aurora and the tragedies Darius (1603), Croesus (1604), The Alexandrean (1605), and Julius Caesar (1607). The tragedies contain several distinguished soliloquies. His other works include the epic Doomesday, or the Great Day of the Lord's Judgment(1614). William Alexander (son of A. Alexander and Elizabeth F.) born1567?,died 1640 married to Janet Erskin This may be the William Alexander that was a special favorite of James VI, King of Scotland,who knighted him and made him Master of Requests in 1614. The king also called him the "Philosophical Poet" because of poetical productions of high merit. when James became King James I of England,Sir William Alexander accompanied him to London and devoted the rest of his life to the political affairs of the Court. "In a few years he was make a Scots peer, with the title Lord Alexander of Tullibodie, then Viscount of Canada, Viscount and Earle of Stirling and Earl of Dovan and was invested with large estates in Scotland and vast territories in the New World. He was conferred the power to make officers of State and justice,coin money for his colony and appoint 150 baronets of England, Scotland and Ireland, hold their title from patents granted by William Alexander, Earl of Stirling." He sent his son William to Nova Scotia who lived 12 years at Port Royal as Governorof Nova Scotia William was born in Stirling in 1580 (according to J.B.Alexander), died in London in 1640, and was buriedin Stirling.(Note thatthe death date concurs with WFT).
