Notities over Isabela Fraser

BIOGRAPHY: In her pension application following Stephen's death, Isabela says, "I was taken prisoner with my husband and so kept over two years, in the time of the Revolution. My mother was opposed to my marriage; my father dead. Trowbridge stole me away and married me with little form and in haste--my brother Captain Frasier, belonged to the British army, and my Uncle was General Frasier, killed at the battle of Saratoga. This Captain Frasier was in the habit of visiting me and happened to be there when my husband and I came back after the reconciliation with my mother, which was two or three weeks after the marriage. The next night Capt. Frasier came with some men and took us both prisoners and carried us to Montreal. Mr. Trowbridge was a great singer of songs, and knew many adapted to the times and situation and used to sing them in Montreal, for which he was frequently imprisoned, when Capt. Frasier was not there, but as soon as he found it out he was released through his influence on my account, as I insisted on and was permitted to share his close confinement."

Based upon these statements, we know that Isabela's father was the brother of Brigadier General Simon Fraser [1729-77], and therefore her grandfather is Alexander Fraser of Balnain [c1671-1749].  The precise identity of her father, however, is unknown, though he must have died prior to 1780.  The most likely candidate, given Isabela's date of birth, would be Angus Fraser [1717-1778], but this is entirely speculative.  Her brother, identified only as "Captain Frasier," might be Capt. Alexander Fraser, who led a company of Marksmen and Indians under command of General Burgoyne and was known to be a nephew of General Simon Fraser.

Isabella Fraser Trowbridge who parents are unknown at this time was a Revolutionary War Patriot. She was born abt 1763 in Schenectady County, New York. She married Stephen Trowbridge 10 May 1780 in Skenesborough, Washington County, New York. Her family strongly objected to her marriage as her husband was American Revolutionary Soldier. Isabella's Uncle was British General Simon Fraser who was killed at the battle of Saratoga. Her mother was a loyalist as well as her brother British Capt. Fraser. Isabella and her husband were captured by the British and sent to Montreal, Canada and held as prisoners of war. While there, their first two children were born. Stephen and Isabella had nine children: Archibald, William, Daniel, Betsy, Polly, Sally, Stephen, Samuel, and Isabella. After the war the Trowbridges lived in many locations from Connecticut to New York. Stephen Trowbridge engaged in the mercantile business in Sullivan, New York. After that Stephen left his family to conduct business in Canada and finally resided in Berkshire, Vermount. Isabella remained in New York residing in Cortland County with her daughter Sally Crofoot's family for twelve years. She was ill and lame and it believed that she passed right before her daughter Sally family left to settle in Noble County, Indiana. Unable as of yet to locate her grave.
Isabella was my 3rd Great Grandmother.
