Kind(eren):
Jan Slicker married in Medemblik, but the name of his wife is not known. However, we do know the couple had five children.
His christian name "Jan" is determined by the fact that when he registered the birtsh of his children, they all had the name "Jansz" added to their own. "Jansz" means Janszoon or "son of Jan". Similarly, "Jandr" is Jansdochter or Jan's daughter.
All this is still to be found in the Baptism Register in medemblik.
The family changes the spelling of the name Slicker to "SLIKKER" in 1682.
Slicker as a name almost certainly refers to an occupation to do with "slik" or "slijk", Dutch for mud, or silted up land that hasn't dried out yet and has no vegetation on it. "Slikken" meant you scooped or dredged slik (mud) out of a ditch etc. Also: cutting peat.
Slikker is a name that originated in the province of Noord-Holland and the name is still common in this province. However, over the years Slikkers have emigrated to the United States, Canada, South Africa and Australia.
