"Dad was born in Omemee and when he was still 15, in 1918, he went into the army. His mother and father moved to Hibbing, Minnesota. When he got out of the army, he went there and met and married Mama. Mama's family had moved there after the death of her mother. She died of the flu.
"Alta was born in Minnesota and as soon as they could, they went back to Bottineau County. Dad worked as a farm hand until they got a little ahead and bought a place in a wooded area called the Turtle Mountains, by the Canadian border. Dad lost the place after about three years, and he went to share cropping. But that didn't last long because the landlord wanted someone with a tractor, so more of the land could be used. Dad farmed with horses. Dad tried other things to make a living but it just didn't work out and on 14 Feb 1942, he left to go to Montana to look for work. When we heard from him again, he was in California where his sister Margaret lived. He found work there so when school was out that year, we went there, too.:" SOURCE: Mae Schoonover Allman.
