Profile of Dierick van Rockourt alias Theodorus de Rocourt
Period 1580-1600
Since July 2012, evidence is accumulating that the Dutch Recourt and the Flemish Roucourt family originated from the Liège area, more specifically the familiy name is derived from the village of Rocourt. A document was retrieved from the Liège archive, stating that Theodrico de Rocourt lost his father Theodrici in 1583 when he was three years old. Apparently, his father was a shoemaker (califex) in the city of Hasselt. His uncles Lambert de Rocourt and Jacobus de Brabant (mothers side) became his family guardians. Most likely, his mother was Elisabeth de Brabant and both of his parents originated from the Liège area. Whether his mother Elisabeth married again after the death of his father is not known yet. The family names de Rocourt and de Brabant are well represented in the archives of Liège, while the first name Theodorus is most likely associated with the de Brabant family. Although not proven yet, Theodrico (Dierick) born about 1580 probably lived in Hasselt during his childhood. At least two of his children were born in this city. No information about his mother has been found yet.
Period 1600-1610
The church registers of Hasselt disclosed the baptism of two children from Theodorici and his first wife Anna Stas: Elizabetha Roekets (9-11-1604) and Johannes Roekerts (4-11-1605). Their marriage certificate has not been found yet. Interestingly, a Theodoricus van Brabant was baptized on 10 may 1605 as a son of Leonardi and Agnetis Greven. This family may have been related to the mother of the Rocourts, esp. since members of the Prijs family were godfathers at both the van Brabant and Rocourt baptisms. The next sign of the family is found in 1610 at Halen, which is located about 15 km west of Hasselt. Judith is baptized as a daughter of Theodorius van Rookou and Anne Stas.
Period 1610-1623
The family lived in Halen and Elisabeth, Christophorus, Anna and Joannes were born there. Unfortunately, all of these children died at a young age. At that time, the people of Halen and other neighbouring towns such as Herck-de-Stad suffered severely from the plague and other lethal diseases. In addition, the 80-years war between the Spanish and the Dutch ruined a great part of the infrastructure of this Limburg town.
The birth certificate of another child, Theodorus, has not been found yet, but it is known that he married in Leuven (feb.1635) with Joanna Verwijst and became a cloth-merchant (lakenmaker). His son, Joannes Roucourt studied Philosophy & Theology at Leuven University and became Dean of the St.Gudule Cathedral at Brussels. His sister Judith apparently also moved to Leuven and married Melchior Verschueren in 1633. The first wife of Theodorus alias Dierick, Anne Stas died on May 21, 1623, in Halen. Most likely, she was born in Herck-de-Stad at January 18, 1576 and thus reached the age of 47. A few days later, Dierick van Rockourt sells a piece of land to Jan Schipmans. This suggests that Dierick may have been in need of cash, to finance his household and/or the burial of his first wife. The document is displayed below, including a partial Flemish translation.
Period 1623 - 1637
Dirks (Theodoricus van Rokoert) second marriage, to Maria Claes, took place on September 20, 1623 (see right). Of their three children, Tilmannus Raucourt (1631), is the second generation of the family tree. Dirk is mentioned in a number of documents, including the sales of several houses in Halen (1622-1627). In August 1633, he became the concierge of the townhall of Halen, being responsible for executing the decisions made by the city council.
Until about 1599, it was relatively peaceful in Halen since the Spanish were at war with both France and England. As soon however the peace was signed between Philips II and Hendrik IV, Spanish forces moved through the area and raided the towns and villages. In 1604, the forces of archduke Albrecht attacked Halen and destroyed part of the city. Further, the plague was severe in the year 1605 and the mayor prohibited any contact between man and wife. During the 12 years of peace between the Spanish and Dutch forces (1609 - 1621), Halen partly recovered. Even producers of textiles moved from Tilburg and Den Bosch to Halen and constructed a mill which used the water of the Vete. Again, the plague (1624-1625) and dysentery (1629) caused many casualties, most like including the children of Dirk and his first wife Anna. In addition, the city had to provide for various Spanish forces. Then, starting in 1635, Halen was attacked by the Prince of Orange, the defences at the river Demer were destroyed and the town was conquered by an army of 50.000 French and Dutch soldiers. The army from the North could however not conquer Leuven (Loven) and retreated. But, they kept on attacking the region and also conquered the city of Maastricht.
During the night of the 10th of July 1637, Halen was raided by soldiers of the Prince of Orange which were stationed at Maastricht. Dirk van Roucourt was shot and killed during this attack. His house at Halens Broek was burnt and the taxes he had collected for improving the dykes at the river Demer were stolen.
