Hugh I of Châ¢tillon (died April 9, 1248), was Count of Blois from 1230 to 1241, and Count of Saint Pol from 1226 to 1248.
He was son of Gaucher II of Châ¢tillon and Elisabeth of Saint Pol.
In 1226, Hugh married Marie of Avesnes, daughter of Walter of Avesnes and Margaret of Blois. They had 5 children:
1.John (d. 1280), Count of Blois
2.Guy (d. 1289), Count of Saint Pol
3.Gaucher (d. 1261), lord of Crâ©cy and Crevecoeur
4.Hugh (d. 1255)
5.Basile (d. 1280), became Abbess of Notre Dame du Val in 1248
Through his marriage Hugh became the first count of Blois from the house of Châ¢tillon. It marked the end of the first dynasty of Blois that lasted over 400 years. After the death of Marie, Hugh married Mahaut, daughter of the Count of GuâÆnes.
Hugh followed the pious king Louis IX when he started on the Seventh Crusade in 1248. Passing Avignon, there was a skirmish with some villagers in which Hugh was killed. Most of the 50 knights of his retinue returned home after the incident.

Counts of Blois
*Before 1216 he married Agnâ®s de Bar, daughter of Thibaud I, Count de Bar & Luxembourg and Ermesinde de Bar. In 1225 Hugh became notorious for his treatment of Agnâ®s; from horseback, he dragged her by the hair to the town of Couilly to punish her for an adulterous relationship with a page. She died of her wounds.
In April 1226 Hugh married Marie D·ÄôAvesnes, Countess de Blois, daughter and heiress of Gautier II D·ÄôAvesnes, seigneur D·ÄôAvesnes, Guise & Conde, and Marguerite de Blois. To show repentance for his abuse of Agnâ®s, Hugh founded, with Marie's assistance, the first abbey of Pont aux Dames, near the place of his misdeed. He and Marie had four sons of whom three, Jean, Guy II and Gaucher IV had progeny.
Between 1225 and 1230 Hugh strengthened the ramparts around Crâ©cy which he had built with his father. His second wife Marie died in 1241, and he then married Mahaut de GuâÆnes, daughter of Arnold II, Count de Guines and Bâ©atrix de Bourbourg. This marriage produced no offspring. Hugh set off for the Holy Land with the Seventh Crusade, which left France in 1248. Passing Avignon, there was a skirmish with some villagers in which Hugh was killed on 9 April. Most of the 50 knights of his retinue returned home after the incident. -The Plantagenet Ancestry, Baltimore, 1975, Turton, Lt.Col. W. H. 167.
