John Adams was the immigrant ancestor. His will dated 28 Dec 1752 provided the names of his family members. Other biographical information came from cemetery records of the Lamington Church, Bedminster, Somerset, New Jersey and also from History of the Lamington Church. (Descendants of John Adams, prepared by Diane Houser)
Since his death date of 12 Jul 1753 apparently came from the cemetery records of the Lamington Church, John Adams must be bur. in that cemetery. This is very significant, because Ephraim McDowell is also bur. in that cemetery.
John Adams born 1672 and Ephraim Mc Dowell born abt. 1688, having both come from County Antrim, probably knew each other in Ireland, probably arrived in America about the same time, and certainly ended up in the same New Jersey town- even the same graveyard. It was Ephraim who md. John's oldest dau. and dearest treasure, not some stranger in whom John would have difficulty placing his trust. Perhaps it was Margaret that brought John Adams to Bedminster Township, Somerset, New Jersey.
It is also interesting that the first child of John Adams listed in the Houser material is Mac Dale Adams. The dau. of John Adams appears in the Ancestral File as "Margaret Adams Mack Dale" in connection with marriage to Ephraim McDowell. "Mac" means "son of" in Scottish, Gaelic and Irish. It could be that the father of John Adams was Adam Mac Dale or Dale Adams- or that the wife of John Adams was Elizabeth Mac Dale. At first sight, I thought "Mack Dale" was a corruption of the "Mc Dowell" surname, but it is more likely an important clue. The important point is that these two references to "Mac Dale" indicate a link between John Adams and Ephraim McDowell. (RAJ, 29 Oct 1999)
"My John Adams of Bedminster, Somerset, New Jersey in his will dated Dec 1752 names sons Matthew, William, James and Samuel, and dau. Margaret Adams MacDowell (McDowell, wife of Ephraim). Matthew and William divide the real estate equally and James, Samuel and Margaret are bequeathed cash. This indicates that James and Samuel had already left the area. In the 1790 census, James and Samuel are listed in Fayette County, Pennsylvania... In 1800 the same names appear, along with Thomas and Solomon. Frank Dougan is responsible for identifying Samuel and James as sons of John, using, among other sources, the history of Fayette county and marriage records which connect back to Somerset County, New Jersey. It has always amused me to note that by 1795, the year after the Whiskey Rebellion was squashed (in Fayette county), four of Major Robert Adams' children turn up in Kentucky. Were they running away? Had the turmoil in Fayette county made them decide to move on, or was it coincidence that they left at this time? Anyhow, John, Robert Jr., Mary and her husband Moses Baird, and Margaret and her husband John Heath had all bought land in Adams County, Ohio by 1800." (Robert "Bob" Adams, Texas)
"The above reference (by Bob Adams) to Thomas and Solomon appearing in the Fayette County 1800 census is what is heading me in the direction that my Thomas may be the son of Samuel, plus the fact that an IGI record stating so. Also, my Thomas had a sons named Solomon, Henry, John, James and daus. named Sarah, Mary, Rachel and Jane. These are the children of he and his first wife Agnes (last name unknown). They were md. in 1791. Thomas' second marriage was in 1814 in Ohio. As stated earlier, I have no info on Thomas and his first wife or their whereabouts bef. 1814. The children mentioned above were born bet. 1792 and 1811..." (Aileen Brandis, (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX) on 21 Jun 2001)
