LINEAGE The name of Gurney or Gournay is from the town of Gournay in Normandy When Normandy was coded to Rollo by Charles Simple in 912 it is stated by the local historians that town of Gournay and adjacent territory of Le Brai given to Eudes one of his followers from whom the ancient lords of Gournay The first of these by deed was Reginald Lord of Gournay son Walter founded the monastery of La Fertó the year 996 with the consent of Hugh his older Another Hugh called Hugh II was one of the generals at the battle of Mortomer in 10M he Hugh III were at tho battle of Hastings This latter Basilia Flaitel and from him the descents of this are clear she was dau of Gerard Flaitel and sister Agnes wife of William Gífford Earl of Buckingham William Bishop of Evreux Hugh de Gournay III manors in Essex at the time of the survey and d at Abbey of Bee in Normandy where bo was shorn a monk before the year 1093.
