The Courtenay family took its name from the town of Courtenay in the French division of Gastinois, which stands on a hill near the banks of the river Clairee in Ile-de-France, between Sens on the east and Montargis on the west (about 56 miles south of Paris).

Athon, who fortified the town in the 11th century, took the surname "de Courtenay," and thus gave the name of the town to his descendants. He was the son of a chatelain or governor of the Castle Renaud (or Raynard) in Courtenay.
From him are derived the royal line of Courtenay in France, and the English house of Courtenay who were the Barons of Okehampton and Earls of Devon [A genealogical history of the noble and illustrious family of Courtenay in three parts : the first giveth an account of the Counts of Edessa, of that family, the second of that branch that is in France, the third, of that branch that is in England, pp. 1-3].
