Francis Gunter Dykes Welborn b. 1838/40 was my 2nd great grandaunt on the Gunter side and her husband George Washington Dykes was my 2nd great grand uncle on the Dykes side. (Her sister Permelius Gunter m. his brother Benjamin Franklin Dykes; were my 2nd great grandparents).

Anyway, after George W. Dykes was killed in 1862 in the civil war, she married G.M. Welborn. She had daughters Elizabeth b. 1859 and Matilda b.
1863, her being pregnant at the time of George's death. I have her husband listed as G.M. Welborn, and you have him listed as Younger
Welborn. I do not know where my uncle came up with the name G.M.; but he has been researching our genealogy for over twenty years and that is the
information that was given to me.

To clear up the post you have on GenForum 7/19/1998; Martha Dykes was the mother of George Washington Dykes, and Cinthia (Cynthia) was his sister.
I am not exactly sure who Sara E. Dykes is, I have a Sarah Ann Dykes who m. ??Scott. I have found more children that Martha Dykes and her husband
Benjamin had than we had orginally found, so Sarah may be Martha's daughter. I would definitely like to make a connection there. Sarah and
Francis were not sisters, but more likely sister-in-laws. I really would like to know what Francis' husbands actual name was. Also any decendents
who are interested or may have information on the Gunter side.

Here are other Welborns in my tree.

Saravilly(?) Welborn m. Fletcher Jones b. est. 1840-1845 son of John Jones and Sarah Barefield

James Lawerence Welborn m. Tobitha Welch b. 4/1/1826 d. 9/1899 daughter of Bryant Welch and Sabra (Sally) Martin (I think I have alot of info on
these)

Alonzo Welborn b. 1872 m. Candice I. Dykes b. 2/9/1886 d. 4/8/1951 daughter of George Allen Dykes and Mary Marzillia Jones

Their children are:
Orion Herman Welborn b. 10/16/1905 d. 10/2/1976
Oree Gorman Welborn b. 6/22/1908 d. 4/22/1962
George Evan Welborn b. 4/17/1910 d. 3/9/1971
Gauis Hilton b. ??

Jane Welborn 2nd wife of Millard Filmore Valentine b. 5/21/1853 d. 7/13/1943 Millard's first wife was (Amanda) Ellen Dykes daughter of
Benjamin F. Dykes and Permeluis Gunter Dykes (sister to Francis).

Martha Dykes, she died in 1862, so I find it interesting that you found her on the 1860 census of Jones co. She is buried in Covington Co. next
to Tabitha and Jesse Geiger/Gieger, in some woods that are grown over.

She must have either lived on the edge of Jones Co. or she went and stayed with another daughter we found Eleanor Jane who married Tabitha
and Jesse's son Zacariah Geiger. Martha's maiden name was Geiger.

I don't mean to rattle on with all this other info, but the Geiger's, Dykes, Welborn, Jones, Gunter, Welch and also the Ishee's are so intertwined.

If you can make anysense of this I would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks!!
Kim Powers

Benjamin Franklin DYKES was my great great grandfather. Benjamin DYKES
(spelled Dikes in the census book) was Mellie's grandfather. He was born
in the Orangeburg District of South Carolina in 1781, but was living in
Jasper county MS by the 1830's. His oldest son (Mellie's father) Benjamin
Franklin DYKES, Sr. was born in MS in 1835. He was in Company F, 7th
Batallion, MS Infantry during the Civil War. A farmer, he sometimes went
AWOL when he had to go home to plant or harvest the crops. This was not
an uncommon practice. His only brother, George Washington DYKES, was also
in Company F, but was killed early in the war.
Frances Melvina DYKES (Big Mama) known as "Mellie" or "Mel" was born in
MS in 1869 and married William Thomas "Tom" JOHNSTON (Big Dad) in 1887.
They moved in the early 1890's to Pelican, LA.
After the Civil War many of their relatives and neighbors had already
begun the move west from Jasper and Jones Counties to the Pelican area. A
group of these people most of whom were related, were known as the
"Mississippi Settlement" community. Some of these early settlers were
Blackwells, Davises, Johnikens, Raborns, Rishers, and WELBORNS among
others. Tom JOHNSTON was a cotton farmer and owned quite a bit of
property and cattle. When the oil and gas boom hit Pelican about 1915, he
and his sons hauled oilfield equipment. An oil company drilled a well on
the property, but only hit gas and abandoned the well. Mellie JOHNSTON
raised her family, never learning to read or write. She could count money
though. After her husband died of.DYKES Page 16 of 17

Parkinsons Disease in 1939, she continued to live in Pelican. Her son,
Luther, lived next door and looked after her, later moving her into his
own home. She died in 1960 at the age of 91.
Permelia GUNTER (Mellie's mother) was the daugher of Elizabeth of South
Carolina (b 1808) and Allen GUNTER of South Carolina (b 1798). She was
born in Smith County, MS in 1835. Her first child was born in 1855 and
her last in 1876. She died sometime between 1876 and 1894 because her
husband, B. F. DYKES, Sr. married Savilia Anderson "Sis" in Aug 1894.
    B. F. DYKES, Sr moved to Pelican where he lived with his daughter, Mellie
and her family for several years before his death. They added a room onto
the house for him in the front by the porch. He spent a lot of time on
that porch with his rocker and his chewing tobacco. He was known as"Pap".
