== Biography ==John Cory, son of William Cory and Mary (Earle) Cory was born about 1655/1660 probably in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Note: there were no counties in Rhode Island until 1703.

(Both he and son were of Portsmouth, at this date.

John married Elizabeth, estimated about 1680, before the birth of their first child also estimated at about 1682. She was still living 15 Dec 1713, when His son Thomas, with consent of mother Elizabeth, put himself apprentice to Christopher Lindsay, of Newport, house carpenter, for the term of four years, eight months and seventeen days.
A family tradition claims that Elizabeth was an Indian princess named Gassoset, daughter of Minnetinka. This legend is mentioned in the handwritten William Cory genealogy believed to have been written by Edwin Francis Corey.
"14 old burial plots were removed from South Quidnessett farms to make room for the former Quonset Naval Air Station during WWII in 1941. They were reburied at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery."Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery [http://quidnessettmemorialcemetery.org/gallery/historic-landmark/ "Historic Landmark"] There are two footstones labeled E.C. and J. C. believed to be theirs.
The will of John Cory proved 14 July 1712 [North Kingstown Town Council & Probate 5:121-123] is badly burned top, bottom and edges. He named his wife Elizabeth and his broth[burned] as executors. Elizabeth was left land and moveable estate. Also named were son John Corey, son A[-burned-]..given him before by deed. An inventory was taken 30 June 1712.:Anthony Corey was given a houselot by an unnamed father, which he gave to his brother Thomas in his will. "This son, A[burned away] [land] given him before by a Deed [burned away] ... was surely Anthony Corey of Newport who died probably in the summer of 1715, leaving a will dated 8 April 1714 and proved 1 August 1715."Austin's Genealogical Dictionary named only sons William, John, Elisha, Joseph, Thomas. Anthony's will named his brothers Thomas, William John and Joseph and sisters Dina Card, Hopestill Card, Ann Allen and Elizabeth Cory and also nephew Anthony, son of William.
Inventory, 30 June 1712: wearing apparel, beds, loom, 2 pair of worsted combs, spinning wheel, &c.*26 June 1713 Widow Elizabeth, of Kings Town, sold John Mumford, of Newport, 91 acres in East Greenwich, for 16 pounds.
