Adopted as heir by his half-uncle Thomas [West], 9th Baron la Warre (to the apparent exclusion of his father's elder brother of the whole blood, Sir Owen West, who dspm. 1551); found guilty of attempting to poison his half-uncle and disabled from all honours by Act of Parliament 1 Feb 1549/50; restored in blood 10 Apr 1563; joint Lord Lieutenant of Sussex 1569; knighted 5 Feb 1569/70.

Husband of (1) Elizabeth Strange, and (2) Anne Swift.
West married firstly, before 1555, Elizabeth Strange, the daughter of Thomas Strange of Chesterton, Gloucestershire, by whom he had two sons and three daughters.
