Leven
Infanta Maria Barbara werd geboren als de oudste dochter van koning Johan V van Portugal en diens echtgenote Maria Anna, dochter van keizer Leopold I van het Heilige Roomse Rijk. Ze werd drie jaar geboren na het huwelijk van haar ouders. Haar vader was bang geweest dat er geen kinderen zouden komen en had God beloofd een groot klooster te bouwen als hij een zoon zou krijgen. In 1711 werd er dan eindelijk een dochtertje geboren. Zij was bij haar geboorte de zogenaamde “vermoedelijke troonopvolgster”. Deze titel zou vervallen, zodra ze een broertje kreeg. Dit gebeurde in 1712, toen haar broertje Peter werd geboren. Hij stierf echter snel, maar na Peter was er al een andere broer geboren, Jozef, die inderdaad koning van Portugal zou worden. Later volgde nog een broer Peter, die ook koning van Portugal werd.

Maria Barbara kreeg een goede scholing en hield erg veel van muziek. Ze kreeg dan ook een paar jaar muziekles van de Italiaanse componist Domenico Scarlatti en was een goede pianist.

De prinses trad op 20 januari 1729 in Badajoz in het huwelijk met de toekomstige koning Ferdinand VI van Spanje en werd daardoor koningin van Spanje. Haar broer Jozef trouwde met Ferdinands halfzusje, de Spaanse prinses Maria Anna Victoria. Maria Barbara verhuisde na haar huwelijk naar Spanje en componist Scarlatti reisde met haar mee. Tijdens zijn leven heeft hij honderden sonates voor haar.

Maria Barbara was niet bepaald een schoonheid en er wordt dan ook gezegd dat Ferdinand zich wezenloos schrok, toen hij voor het eerst aan haar werd voorgesteld. Toch raakten Ferdinand en Maria Barbara erg aan elkaar gehecht en deelden ze hun passie voor muziek. Toen zijn echtgenote, die haar hele leven al aan astma leed, in 1758 op 46-jarige leeftijd stierf, brak dat ook zijn hart. Hun huwelijk was kinderloos gebleven.
