Het duurde natuurlijk wel even voordat het zo'n drieduizend inwoners tellend Baarn de gevolgen van de in 1874 in gebruik genomen spoorlijn op Amsterdam merkte. Toen Arie Daatzelaar bijvoorbeeld op 8 november 1882 in de Stationsweg achter de kerk zijn handel in koloniale- en grutterswaren begon, was het totaal aan winkels in ons dorp op de vingers van één hand te tellen.

Nu is de Laanstraat tot ver in de omtrek een begrip als winkelstraat, toen waren er aan de pas verharde weg voornamelijk tuintjes en bomen. Zegge en schrijve drie winkeliers waren in die jaren, in wat nu een centrumstraat is, actief. Horsman, Kuiken en Veenendaal.

Dan had je in de Hoofdstraat nog de "Oude Amsterdamsche Winkel" van de weduwe E. van Dapperen. Daar zou in de mobilisatietijd van 1939 "Onder de Linde" komen, nu alweer geruime tijd opgevolgd door "Royal". Verder waren er nog winkeltjes in de Turfstraat (De Ruig), op de hoek Noorderstraat / Piet Heinlaan (Veldhuizen) en op de hoek Oosterstraat / Sparrenlaan (Kerkhof).

Die Arie Daatzelaar was een geboren en getogen Baarnaar, zijn ouders hadden een café "De Nachtegaal" aan de Eemnesserweg, waar nu dat lieve "Beukenootje" staat. De Nachtegaallaan ontleent trouwens haar naam aan dit vroegere café en niet aan de beroemde zangvogel, zoals menigeen denkt. Dat verklaart gelijk, waarom deze vogelnaam niet in de vogelbuurt gesitueerd is.

Twee broers van Arie kozen voor een agrarische toekomst en bezaten een boerderij aan de Zandvoortweg. Maar Arie sloeg een andere weg in, kocht van gemeentebode H. Beurmanjer diens huis achter de Brinkkerk, een transport dat werd verzorgd door notaris Harmanus Pen uit de Achterstraat. Het huisnummer was eerst D6, maar werd later (op 22 november 1911) nummer 8.

Eerst verkocht men alleen kruidenierswaren in die nieuwe winkel, maar na een dweil, gevolgd door een paar klompen, kwamen er allengs diverse huishoudelijke artikelen bij. Aan de linkerkant van de zaak verscheen daarvoor zelfs een aparte toonbank. Aan die veranderingen van het huisnummer ging overigens het nodige vooraf. Het oorspronkelijk pand werd namelijk gesloopt om plaats te maken voor nieuwbouw, terwijl aan de overzijde van de Stationsweg nummer D7 gekocht werd, dat vrij kwam omdat de daar gevestigde apotheek Bierhaalder naar een nieuwe winkel in de Nieuwstraat verhuizen kon.

Zoon Willem ging zich op nummer 8 uitsluitend met huishoudelijke en aanverwante artikelen bemoeien, terwijl de gezusters Bartha en Helena met hun broer Hendrik aan de andere kant van de Stationsweg - alles werd vernummerd tot 11 - een kruidenierswinkel ging drijven, die pas in 1961 beëindigd werd.

Aan de oorspronkelijke bestemming van die nieuwe aanwinst bleef nog geruime tijd een busje herinneren, waarin de Baarnse doktoren hun recepten deponeerden. Op gezette tijden kwam Hein Huurdeman dat busje lichten, om alles naar de nieuwe apotheek van Bierhaalder in de Nieuwstraat te brengen.
