Notes about Teunis Pluim

Het boek van Pluim: "Uit de geschiedenis van Baarn" is nog steeds een belangrijke bron voor de geschiedenis van Baarn. Teunis Pluim werd geboren op 8-1-1864 te Renswoude als zoon van Peter Pluim en Jannetje Overeem. Hij trouwde met Elisabeth Büller. Pluim was een zeer markante figuur in Baarn. Met name door zijn functie als onderwijzer, hoofdonderwijzer en geschiedschrijver genoot hij veel aanzien. Nog steeds is de naam Pluim in Baarn een begrip voor mensen die enigszins interesse hebben in de geschiedenis van Baarn. Op 21 oktober 1931 overleed hij te Baarn en werd begraven op de oude algemene begraafplaats in Baarn. Zijn grafmonument is nog steeds aanwezig.
Onderstaande levensbeschrijving heb ik ontvangen van Dhr. Hans Nijborg waarvoor mijn hartelijke dank. Hans is een kleinzoon van Teunis Pluim.

Teunis Pluim ontving van 1878 tot 1882 zijn opleiding als onderwijzer aan de Normaalschool te Amerongen. Terwijl hij studeerde, was hij van 1879 tot 1882 als kwekeling verbonden aan de openbare school te Renswoude. Feitelijk is zijn onderwijsloopbaan dus in 1879 begonnen, zodat hij precies 50 jaar bij het openbaar onderwijs werkzaam is geweest. In 1882 slaagde hij voor onderwijzer. Twee betrekkingen werden hem toen aangeboden, Eén in Utrecht en één in Amerongen. Hij koos voor Utrecht, maar aangezien hem het stadsleven niet beviel, ging hij na verloop van één jaar naar Hoogland, waar hij drie jaar in functie bleef.

Op 15 juli 1886 trad hij als onderwijzer aan de Oosterschool in functie. Deze betrekking vervulde hij tot 15 april 1904, met ingang van die datum werd hij benoemd tot hoofd van de Westerschool die op die dag geopend werd. Bijna vijfentwintig jaar is hij als hoofd van deze school werkzaam geweest. Onder grote belangstelling herdacht hij in 1911 dat hij vijfentwintig jaar als leraar actief was in Baarn. In 1929 ging hij met pensioen.

Hij was een van oprichters van de Baarnse gymnastiek- en schermverening. Lange tijd had hij zitting in het bestuur van deze vereniging waarvan hij, gedurende enige jaren, de functie van voorzitter vervulde. Veertien jaar lang vervulde hij het secretariaat van het departement Baarn van de Maatschappij tot Nut van het Algemeen. Onder zijn secretariaatschap werd de Nutstekenschool gesticht. Van de Floraliavereniging was hij sinds de oprichting de ijverige secretaris. Steeds was hij hulpvaardig en bereid om anderen met zijn kennis, speciaal op het gebied van historie, van dienst te zijn. In 1929 werd hij door de Raad van Baarn belast met de opsporing van stukken en voorwerpen van historische betekenis. Zijn verdiensten als historicus werden erkend door zijn benoeming tot lid van de ouheidkundige vereniging Gelre in Arnhem, van het historisch genoodschap in Utrecht, en van de oudheidkundige vereniging oud-Utrecht. De vereniging oud-Ede bood hem het erelidmaatschap aan. Als schrijver van boeken heeft hij een grote bekendheid verworven, terwijl in de loop der jaren vele bijdragen van zijn hand in verschilende bladen en periodieken verschenen. Na zijn overlijden verscheen zijn standaardwerk "Uit de geschiedenis van Baarn". Een comité uit de burgerij, waarvan Jhr. Mr. G. C. J. van Reenen, burgemeester, erevoorzitter en Jhr. Ir. F. E. P. Sandberg, wethouder van onderwijs, voorzitter was, heeft zorg gedragen voor het monument op zijn graf.

In Baarn is zelfs een straat naar hem vernoemd: Meester Pluimhof.
