Notes about Teunis Koenen

Teunis Koenen, echtgenoot van Gerharda van Diermen kwam in 1906 vanuit Bunschoten naar Baarn. De bevolking in Bunschoten was onder te verdelen in “De Vissers” en “De Boeren”. De voorouders van Teunis hoorden bij “De Boeren”. In de regel waren de boeren wat rijker dan de vissers. Zij hadden immers grond en boerenbedrijven. Vaak bekleedden de boerenfamilies ook belangrijke funkties. Voorouders van Teunis waren onder andere schepen, burgemeester, kerkmeester en ouderling. Tot ca. 1800 werd de naam nog geschreven als Coenen. Tegenwoordig komt de naam Koenen niet meer voor in Bunschoten-Spakenburg.

Het is de familie Koenen niet voor de wind gegaan. Op het moment dat de familie naar Baarn vertrok hadden de familieleden moeite om de eindjes aan elkaar te knopen. Van de bezittingen die de Koenens vroeger hadden is niets meer over.

Teunis ontmoet in Baarn Gerharda (Gradje) van Diermen. Haar naam doet vermoeden dat zij ook uit Bunschoten kwam. Dit is echter niet zo. Er is geen relatie met deze tak gevonden. Zij is in Soest geboren en woonde later met haar ouders in de Elisabethstraat in Baarn. In 1908 trouwde ze met Teunis en vestigden ze zich ook in de Elisabethstraat, een paar huizen verwijderd van Gradje’s ouders Cornelis van Diermen en Neeltje van de Biezen.

Teunis komt net als zijn broers Arie Willem, Wouter en Frans in dienst bij publieke werken in Baarn. Daar zijn ze dan straatvegers, straatlantaarnaanstekers en brandweermannen. Nog steeds geen vetpot dus. Ook Gerharda zal moeten bijdragen in het levensonderhoud. Zij gaat aan het werk als dienstbode en als ze in verwachting raakt van haar kinderen is ze ook zoogmoeder voor rijkere Baarnaars. Dat wil zeggen dat ze kinderen van rijke ouders borstvoeding gaf omdat de echte moeders dit niet wilden of konden doen. Ook heeft zij menigmaal als vroedvrouw gefungeerd als er kinderen in de buurt geboren werden.
