Notes about Jean KICKX

#Générale#Fils de Jean Kickx (1775-1831) et de Jeanne Catherine Van Merstraeten, Kickx est né le 17 janvier 1803 à Bruxelles. Il fait ses humanités au Lycée de Bruxelles et poursuit, en 1825, son cursus en suivant les cours de sciences de l’Université de Louvain. En 1830, il obtient le double diplôme de docteur en sciences et en pharmacie. Lors de ses études, il prend part à différents concours, en 1826, 1828, 1829, et 1830 et est à chaque fois couronné [1].
Une fois ses études terminées, il rentre à Bruxelles pour travailler avec son père mais se consacre surtout à l’étude de la botanique.
Le 10 juillet 1831, Kickx cède la pharmacie familiale à M. L. F. De Preter, un ancien élève de son père[2]. 
Il reprend les postes de professeur qu’avait occupés son père tant au Musée des sciences et des lettres, à partir du 3 février 1831, qu’à l’École de médecine de Bruxelles, dès le 22 février 1831. Le premier avril de la même année, il devient également inspecteur-général des hôpitaux et hospices de Bruxelles[3].

En 1834, suite à la création de l’Université libre de Bruxelles, l’École de médecine est supprimée. Kickx obtient la chaire de botanique et de minéralogie de la nouvelle institution. Le 15 décembre 1835, il est nommé professeur extraordinaire de l’Université de Gand pour les cours de botanique, de physiologie des plantes, de géographie naturelle et d'anatomie végétale et devient professeur ordinaire et directeur du jardin botanique de la ville, le 20 septembre 1841. 
Il est nommé correspondant de l'Académie royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres de Bruxelles, le 15 décembre 1836 et il devient membre de l’institution le 15 décembre 1837. Il est directeur de la Classe des Sciences en 1852. 
Kickx contribue aux travaux de plusieurs sociétés savantes.
