In de oudheid was Carthago de hoofdstad van het Carthaagse Rijk, waarvan de inwoners door de Romeinen Puniërs (Latijn: Punici) of Carthagers werden genoemd. In de 3e eeuw v.Chr. was het Carthaagse Rijk de grootste rivaal van het Romeinse Rijk. Nadat Carthago in de Punische oorlogen door de Romeinen was verslagen werd het Carthaagse Rijk als provincie Africa onderdeel van het Romeinse Rijk. Carthago werd door de Romeinen in 146 v.Chr. geheel verwoest, maar in 44 v.Chr. werd de stad door diezelfde Romeinen weer opgebouwd en groeide ze uit tot de derde stad in het Romeinse Rijk van de eerste eeuwen na Christus (na Rome zelf en Alexandrië).

    De resten van het oude Carthago (Frans: Carthage, Arabisch: قرطاج) liggen ongeveer 10 km ten oosten van het huidige Tunis, de hoofdstad van Tunesië.
