Dirk Christiaan Marie was beroeps-officier bij de Koninklijke Marine en diende van 1911 tot 1947. Van 1922 tot 1935 voerde hij het gezag over een aantal onderzeeboten in de wateren van Nederlands Oost-Indie. De K-III van 29-11-1922 tot 15-01-1925; de K-IX van 10-07-1925 tot 12-06-1926; de K-VII van 12-06-1926 tot 24-12-1926; de K-XVIII van 23-03-1934 tot 01-08-1934 en de K-XVIII van 06-11-1934 tot 20-08-1935. Hij was voorts commandant van het Onderzeeboot Station Surabaya van 28-02-1936 tot 03-06-1937. Van Mei tot Augustus 1942 verbleef Dirk Christiaan Marie als krijgsgevangene in Duitse gevangenschap , maar werd vanwege gezondheidsredenen vrijgelaten. Vervolgens werd hij op 25-03-1947 benoemd tot Schout bij Nacht.

De verdiensten van Dirk Christiaan Marie Hetterschij (1936, gouden Ruyter-medaille) liggen op het gebied van uitzonderlijk zeemanschap. Hetterschij maakt van november 1934 tot juli 1935 met de onderzeeboot Hr.Ms. K XVIII een wereldreis van Den Helder naar Soerabaja via Kaap de Goede Hoop. Commandant Leopold Gerard Louis van der Kun was hem in 1926 reeds voorgegaan met zijn reis met Hr.Ms. K XIII, ook naar Soerabaja maar nu via het Panamakanaal. Beide commandanten zijn ook benoemd tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.

De derde echtgenote van Dirk Christiaan was Justine Amatha Dorothea Schermer. Zij was eerder van 1919 tot 1934 gehuwd met Karel Willem Frederik Marie Doorman (Karel Doorman) Schout bij Nacht van de Koninklijke Marine, die, in de nacht van 27 op 28 februari 1942 als commandant van "Hr. Ms. De Ruyter", in de slag om de Javazee om het leven kwam en een zeemansgraf vond 60 km ten zuidwesten van het eiland Bawean.
