Notes about Roelof Alving

Roelof Alving was het eerste Hoofd van de school in Oranjewoud, van 1879 tot 1886.
Voordat hij werd benoemd tot hoofd van de school in Oranjewoud, was hij in dezelfde functie werkzaam aan de school in Rotstergaast.
Na zijn komst stond hij al spoedig midden in de dorpsgemeenschap, werd leider van de zangvereniging, die haar repetities hield in “de Koepel” tegenover hotel “De Tent” en was lid van de reciteervereniging “de Heidebloem” (voorzitter van 1881-1886).
Ook was Alving lid van een onderwijzers gezelschap, dat dikwijls haar vergaderingen hield in het bovenzaaltje van hotel “Heidewoud” (Nu hotel “Tjaarda”). Alving is niet lang in Oranjewoud gebleven, in 1886 vertrok hij naar Drenthe.
Hier aanvaarde hij een betrekking in de gemeente Assen.
Van zijn collega’s werd vernomen, dat hij vertrok, omdat hij hoopte in Assen iets bij te kunnen verdienen door het waarnemen van een kerkelijke functie.
Iets wat in die tijd veel voorkwam.
Hiertoe zou hij in Oranjewoud nooit in de gelegenheid komen, omdat Oranjewoud geen kerk had.
Na zijn pensionering vestigde hij zich in Apeldoorn.
