Notes about Hendrik Mathijs (Mathieu) Frencken

Mathieu Frencken (1880-1961) heeft jarenlang geijverd en is opgekomen voor de belangen van de middenstand. In 1919 nam hij de winkel ‘Volksbelang’ in Panningen over van de familie Goossens. Het was een van de drukste winkels in Groot-Helden.

‘Klein maar dapper’ was Mathieu Frencken als zogenaamd ‘zet-kruidenier’ begonnen in de toenmalige Huishoek, later Steenstraat in Panningen.

Levensmiddelen waren er te koop maar ook werden naaimachines hersteld, zo blijkt uit een advertentie uit 1937. Bekend waren de sigaren welke er in de winkel te koop waren.

De winkel kende een grote aanloop van klanten. In 1958 werd besloten de winkel over te doen. Mathieu Frencken en zijn vrouw Petronella Crommentuijn (1883-1959) maakten plaats voor dochter Maria (1913-2013) die met haar echtgenoot Frans Hermans (Koetsers Frans – 1912-1977) de winkel ging doen. Er vond een verbouwing plaats. “In de moderne en snelle tijd was intussen de winkel wat ouderwets geworden”, zo is terug te lezen in een artikel uit Midden-Limburg van 22 november 1958.
Gekozen werd om voor die tijd een moderne winkelinrichting te realiseren. Er werden drie afdelingen gerealiseerd: een baby-afdeling, een levensmiddelen-afdeling en een hoekje voor rookartikelen. Voor dat laatste plaatste men buiten de winkel een automaat, zodat klanten buiten openingstijden ook rookwaren konden verkrijgen, iets dat voor die tijd nieuw was en snel op diverse plekken in het straatbeeld te zien waren.

Mathieu en Petronella wilden het rustiger aan doen; lang konden ze hier niet van genieten want Petronella overleed negen maanden na hun ‘pensionering’. Op de Middenstandsjaarvergadering van 1960 stelde Frencken al zijn functies ter beschikking, omdat hij plaats wilde maken voor jongere krachten.
Ruim 35 jaar was hij bestuurslid van de R.K. Heldense Middenstand. Hij was voorzitter van de onderlinge glasverzekering, secretaris van de Middenstandszegelvereniging, bestuurslid van Santos en de Middenstands Handels Avondschool, vele jaren secretaris van het Actiecomité van de Middenstand en in de moeilijke jaren voor 1940 de grote promotor van de gezamenlijke inkoopvereniging, de KIV.

Door een noodlottig ongeval overleed Mathieu Frencken op maandag 30 oktober 1961 op 81-jarige leeftijd. Hij was per fiets op familiebezoek geweest bij zijn zoon Dré in Ommel en werd op de terugweg tussen Asten en Meijel aangereden door een tractor met aanhangwagen. Hierbij liep hij zware verwondingen op, waaraan hij is overleden.
