Notes about Heidrek Ulfhamr "Wolfhide" Angantyrsson King of Reiðgotaland

King of the Vandals
Some concrete facts of The Lord of the Rings are that not all of his names are original. The Dwarven names in The Hobbit were directly taken from the Norse saga The Elder Edda; Mirkwood was taken from the Icelandic King Heidrek the Wise; and Frodo (as Frode) and Gandalf were lifted from Halfdan the Black. None of these characters are based on their namesakes, however. The Saga of Hervör and King Heidrek / Hervarar saga ok Heidreks konungs, also based partially on older poetry, has an account of the battle of the Goths and Huns among its various episodes, which are
linked by the supernatural sword Tyrfingr.
Hilderic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hilderic, King of the Vandals and Alans (c. 460s - 533, reigned 523-530) was the next-to-last ruler of the North African Kingdom of the Vandals. Although dead by the time the Vandal kingdom was overthrown in 534, he nevertheless played a key role in that event.

Hilderic was a grandson of the legendary King Geiseric, who founded the Vandal kingdom in Africa. His father was Geiseric's son Huneric, and his mother was Eudocia, the daughter of the Roman emperor Valentinian III. Despite his famous bloodline, he was violently unpopular with many of his subjects. Most of the Vandals practiced Arianism, a form of Christianity, and were fervently devoted to it. However, Hilderic favored the Catholicism of his mother, and his accession to the throne was controversial from the start. He was also homosexual, another Vandal taboo.

Hilderic's reign was noteworthy for the kingdom's excellent relations with the Byzantine Empire, as the emperors Justin I and Justinian I approved of his support of Catholicism and his familial ties with the old Roman Empire. He allowed a new Catholic bishop to take office in the Vandal capital of Carthage, and many Vandals began to convert to Catholicism. This alarmed the Vandal nobility.

He was quite old by the time he assumed the crown, well into his fifties at least, and probably over 60 years old. For this reason, he was disinterested in the military operations of the Vandals and left them to other family members, yet another thing which was disapproved of.

After seven years on the throne, Hilderic fell victim to a revolt led by his cousin Gelimer, an Arian who got the people to rise in rebellion in the name of religion. Gelimer then became King of the Vandals and Alans and restored Arianism as the official religion of the kingdom. He imprisoned Hilderic but did not kill him.

Justinian, an ally of Hilderic, protested against Gelimer's actions and demanded that Gelimer return the kingdom to Hilderic. When Gelimer refused, he declared war on the Vandals in 533. Gelimer then had Hilderic murdered.

Succeeded to the throne in 523. Adhered to the Catholic creed of his mother. Aging (old) and in alliance with Constantinople when he was deposed in 530 by his cousin, Gelimer.
In 533 the Byzantines under Belisarius invaded North Africa following the deposition by the usurper Gelimer of Huneric's son, Hilderich, who was a close friend of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. In one campaigning season the Vandal kingdom was destroyed. Rome again ruled the area and restored the churches to the Roman Catholics. The Vandals played no further role in history. [Encyclopaedia Britannica, article on Vandal]
A slight allusion was made in the last chapter to VandalB- the troubles which had fallen on Amalafrida, sister of Theodoric. Her husband Thrasamund, one of the best of the Vandal kings, died in 523, and was succeeded by his cousin the elderly Hilderic. This Accession man, though a son of Hunenc, the most rancorous of all the persecutors of the Catholic Church, shared not his father's animosity against the orthodox. It was generally believed that his mother Eudoxia had influenced him in favour of her form
of faith; and Thrasamund on his death-bed had exacted from him an oath that he would never use
his kingly power for the restoration of their churches to the Catholics. The oath was given ; but Hilderic, who could say with Euripides' hero . - _ . . of Hilderic. ' My lips have sworn, my mind unsworn remains,' devised a clever scheme for escaping from its obligation. The promise had been that he would
not use his kingly poiver for the forbidden purposes. Therefore after Thrasamund's death, but Hilderic
before Hilderic had put on the Vandal crown or Catholics. been proclaimed king in the streets of Carthage, he issued his orders for the return of all the Catholic bishops from exile ; he opened the
churches, which for more than two generations had never echoed to the words ' being of one substance with the Father;' and he made Boniface (a strenuous asserter of orthodoxy, bishop of the African church.
Hilderic's entire reversal of the policy of his predecessor brought him speedily into collision •with that predecessor's widow. The stately and somewhat imperious Amalafrida, who had been probably for twenty years Queen of the Vandals, was not going tamely to submit to see all her husband's friends driven away and his whole system of government subverted. She headed a party of revolt; she called in the assistance of the Moors, ever restless and ever willing to make war upon the actual ruler of Carthage; and battle was joined at Capsa, about .three hundred miles to the south of the capital, on the edge of the Libyan desert. Amalafrida's party were beaten, and she herself was taken captive. So long as her brother Theodoric lived she was kept a close prisoner. Now that the great head of the Amal line was laid low, the Vandal king had the meanness and the cruelty to put his venerable prisoner to death. The insult was keenly felt at the Court of Ravenna, and produced a fatal alienation between the two kingdoms.

Quote:

Angantyr was king over Reidgotaland for many years. He was powerful and a great warrior, and from him are descended lines of kings. His son was Heidrek Wolfhide, who succeeded him and ruled long in Reidgotaland. He had a daughter called Hild. She was the mother of Halfdan Snjalli, father of Ivar the Wide-Grip.
