Jac. Aarts wordt geboren op 4 september 1911 in Hilvarenbeek. Hij is de jongere broer van Jan, die in de meidagen van 1940 sneuvelt in Zeeland.

Jac. voetbalt bij het eerste elftal Volharding en is samen met Jan lid van de Harmonie St. Leonardus in Hilvarenbeek. Net als duizenden andere Nederlanders is Jac. in de jaren dertig werkloos door de crisis. Hij besluit daarom beroepsmilitair bij het KNIL te worden, waarna hij op 3 november 1937 vanuit Amsterdam naar Nederlands-Indië vertrekt, aan boord van M.S. J. Van Oldenbarnevelt. Na aankomst in Bandoeng gaat hij aan het werk als luchtvaartradiotelegrafist op de vliegbasis Andir.

In het voorjaar van 1939 komt ook zijn vrouw Anna Hamers vanuit Nederland over, met wie hij in januari 1939 ‘met de handschoen’ (op afstand) was getrouwd. Basje is hun eerste zoon.

Op 8 maart 1942, een dag voor de capitulatie van het KNIL op Java, wordt Jac. door de Japanners krijgsgevangen genomen en geïnterneerd in Thailand. Daar wordt hij aan het werk gezet aan de Birma-spoorlijn. Tijdens zijn internering verneemt Jac. dankzij een gesmokkeld briefje dat zijn vrouw was bevallen van hun tweede zoon Willy.

Het extreem zware werk, de zeer slechte leefomstandigheden en het tropische klimaat worden Jac. te veel. Op 9 augustus 1943 wordt hij volgens zijn Japanse kampkaart ziek en amper een maand later, op 7 september, overlijdt hij aan malaria in het kamp van Kuie. Hij is 32 jaar geworden.

Pas in oktober 1945 krijgt de familie van het Nederlandse Rode Kruis bericht van zijn overlijden. In 1946 keert zijn vrouw met hun twee zoontjes aan boord van de Japara terug naar Nederland, waar ze intrekken bij de moeder van Jac. in Hilvarenbeek.
