Jappenkamp is een nog gebruikelijke Nederlandse benaming voor Japanse interneringskampen, dat wil zeggen plaatsen waar burgers of krijgsgevangen militairen gedurende de Japanse bezetting van Nederlands-Indië (1942-1945) gedwongen waren te blijven op last en onder toezicht van het Japanse gezag. Nederlanders werden namelijk door de Japanse bezetter, als staatsburgers van landen waarmee Japan direct in oorlog was, beschouwd als 'vijandelijke buitenlanders'. Er was sprake van een harde en wrede behandeling van zowel burger- als krijgsgevangenen, soms met de dood tot gevolg. Ook was er een groot tekort aan voedsel, water en medicijnen. Besmettelijke ziekten, mede veroorzaakt door slechte sanitaire voorzieningen, hadden vrij spel en kostten aan duizenden het leven. De term interneringskamp is omstreden. Volgens Van Dale zijn de bewoners daarvan voor hun eigen veiligheid daarin opgeborgen. Volgens dezelfde bron is een Jappenkamp een door de Japanners gesticht concentratiekamp. In een concentratiekamp worden de overheid onwelgevallige personen opgeborgen (Van Dale). Men zou zelfs kunnen spreken van passieve vernietigingskampen. Door het grootschalig en consequent onthouden van voedsel en medicijnen stierven de bewoners vanzelf uit. De Amerikaanse atoombomaanvallen op Hiroshima en Nagasaki, die de onvoorwaardelijke overgave van Japan tot gevolg hadden, maakten daar een einde aan.
