Als Henri 8 jaar oud is overlijdt zijn vader Koos en wordt wees als hij op 12-jarige leeftijd zijn moeder Naatje verliest. Henri komt met een jonger broertje tragisch terecht in een verwant militair gezin in Den Haag. Wanneer hij thuis was werd hij uitgebuit en in en rond het huis aan het werk gezet. Alleen in de hele vroege ochtenduren kon hij onder het dakraam op zijn kamer studeren voor zijn studie aan de H.B.S. die hij niet kon afronden. Werd later een groot zwemmer en bekend korfballer, die soms voor Nederland uitkwam; lag tijdens de razzia van 10 en 11 nov. 1944 te Rotterdam samen met Gijs van der Stelt, de broer van Adrie, ondergedoken onder een beschotte dakgootnis in de Wolphaertsbocht; zat in het verzet tijdens W.O. II met heldhaftig optreden maar weigerde na de oorlog (een deel van) zijn verzetsdecoraties in ontvangst te nemen.
