Derk Derks de Kleine uit Nijeveen nam in 1811 de achternaam "de Kleine" aan. Zijn zoon Derk is in 1848 naar de VS geemigreerd, zijn kleinzoon Geert in 1865 ook. Momenteel woont het grootste deel van de De Kleine's in de VS.
