In 1903 kwam hij in dienst bij de architect A.J.Sanders. Nadat deze in 1909 onverwacht was gestorven, vestigde Meindert Eelkema zich als zelfstandig architect. Hij zou een van de beeldbepalende architecten van de zuidelijke wijk Helpman worden. Verschillende door hem ontworpen bouwwerken zijn aangewezen als rijks- of gemeentelijk monument.In 1925 ontwierp hij het Helperzwembad,met het verwarmde water waarvan 120 huizen in Helpman werden verwarmd.Het zwembad is gerestaureerd en is nog steeds in gebruik. Van zijn laatste ontwerp, het verzorgingshuis Eugeria, nu een gemeentelijk monument, maakte hij de oplevering niet meer mee. Nadat hij geruime tijd ernstig ziek was geweest, hij leed aan asthma, overleed hij op 18 mei 1930 op 46 jarige leeftijd.
