Arend se hare was rooi, sy oë blou , “with a fair and freckled complexion”, ‘n welige baard, 6 foot 2 inches lank en 14 stone 9 lbs swaar (1903). [GB 1,88 m lang en 93 kg zwaar]
Sy kleindogter Mot: Oupa Arend was ‘n krulkop gewees en baie bedonnerd.
Arend staat vermeld als een boer die in Brakfontein woont en daarna op de boerderij Sckuinskloof bij Nylstroom.
Hy heeft zich aangesloten bij de Transvaalse Polisie, is daar 3e klas trooper. Zijn nationaliteit is Boer en riligie is Dutch Reformed Church.

Hij was een ordonnance in de Anglo-Boerenoorlog onder Genl. Louis Botha.
Een paar avonden voordat ze gevangen genomen werden, droomde Arend dat ze werden gepakt en op zijn aandringen vlogen de vrouwen en kinderen naar de grens met Botswana met de wagen en ossen. Arend was 35 en Thomas Dreyer 24 toen ze werden opgepakt in Dwars River, Waterberg op 15 november 1901 en beiden werden als gevangenen van de oorlog naar Bermuda gestuurd. Met zijn terugkeer naar Zuid-Afrika verzocht Arend de regering om de boerderij Sckuinskloof (1903 Claim Compensation Burghers Waterberg) terug te geven en toen ze bij de boerderij aankwamen, waren alleen de fundamenten van het huis over. De meubels en de huisraad die ze in het bos verborgen hadden en wat ze begraven hadden was er nog steeds en ook nog bruikbaar. [Bron: ANGLO-BOER WAR MUSEUM RECORD: Nummer 25460]

Naast hun tien kinderen hebben ze ook de kinderen van twee van hun dochters, die vrooeg zijn overleden, groot gebracht. Jannie Lee, de zoon van Johanna Christina Lee en de drie zonen van Van der Berh van hun dochter Jan.
