(Life Sketch) : BiographyGilbert was the son of William of Locharret and an unnamed wife and had a sister, Margaret, who married Sir Henry Maule of Panmure.Gilbert was named in charters of Robert Bruce, whereby he was granted various lands, including the forest of Anne, and lands that had previously belonged to Sir Duncan Frendraucht. He and Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, were also among the Bruce loyalist who fled to the Highlands following the defeat at Dalrae by the Earl of Buchan. Having a close association with Alexander Seton and Neil Campbell, these Bruce loyalists swore allegiance to the king, "against all mortals, French, English, and Scots" at Cambuskenineth on 9 September 1308.In 1308, Sir Gilbert of Locharret, son of Sir William Hay of Locharret, and grandson of Sir John of Locharret, married Margaret, daughter of Simon Fraser of Oliver Castle and an unknown wife. It was through Gilbert's marriage to Margaret that he gained the lands of Tweeddale. The marriage Gilbert and Margaret produced the following issue:1.) Thomas, who succeeded his father to the lands of Tweeddale (d. c. 1350). He married Christiana Wardlaw, daughter of the laird of Torreburne in Fife and sister of the Cardinal of Glasgow;2.) Malitius, who died at the battle of Poitiers in France;3.) James, who died at the battle of Poitiers in France;4.) Marjory, married to Alexander Montgomery;5.) Agnes, married to John Fenton, councilor.Gilbert died around 1320. The location of his burial is unknown.Research NotesGilbert swore fealty to Edward I on 12 Jul 1296 and was almost certainly of full age and certainly older than 14. N..B. SP throws some doubt in whether this was Gilbert of Locherwirth or Gilbert of Erroll.Sir Gilbert of Locharret and Tweeddale was a contemporary of Sir Gilbert Hay, fifth laird of Errol, and because they were both Bruce loyalists and kept the same company, the subject of this profile is often conflated with Gilbert of Errol. However, according to Richard Augustin Hay, Gilbert was the only child of Heugh of Locharret and Mariana, sister to Robert Bruce and widow of Lawrence, lord of Abernethy..
He died about 1320 in Scotland.
