Beroep: militair

In de familie gaat het verhaal dat Pieter zowel in de Oost als in de West heeft verbleven en daar ook diverse kinderen heeft verwekt. Tot op heden heb ik echter geen gegevens daarover kunnen vinden.

Koen Winter (*1927 te Asperen, tegenwoordig woonachtig in Haarlem) vertelde mij hierover het volgende: "Enige jaren voor mijn pensionering in 1990, dus waarschijnlijk in de tweede helft van de jaren tachtig, had ik een overleg met onder meer de burgemeester van Zaanstad, dat toen nog een zelfstandige gemeente vormde, over een bepaalde polder. Hij stelde me toen voor aan een medewerker van de gemeentesecretarie die ook Winter heette (zijn voornaam heb ik niet gehoord, we spraken elkaar aan met "meneer") met de woorden: "Kijk eens, hier is je negatief!". De andere Winter was namelijk zwart. Hij was ongeveer tien jaar jonger dan ik. Die man werd me tochkwaad! Ik heb die man bij latere gelegenheden nog wel eens ontmoet, maar hij weigerde me altijd een hand te geven.
Later kwam in de familie eens Oom Piet ter sprake, die eerst naar Indie en daarna naar Suriname zou zijn gegaan. Een zoon van hem uit Suriname zou een baantje hebben gekregen op de gemeentesecretarie van Zaandam."
[Volgens Wiki was de laatste burgemeester van Zaandam als zelfstandige gemeente was R. Laan jr, die het ambt uitoefende tot 1973. Op 1 januari 1974 ging de gemeente Zaandam op in de gemeente Zaanstad. Dit verhaal moet dus veel langer geleden zijn.]

Uit de gegevens die ik ontving van Ineke Hanstra blijkt echter dat Pieter als beroepsmilitair in 1892 naar Indie is gegaan en daar op 21 oktober 1902 is overleden.
