'Honor Ruby Sleper At Senior Center on 92nd Birthday ... Ruby Harkness Sleper, at the age of 4, moved with her family to a farm north of Buffalo Center from southern Iowa. She attended school in Buffalo Center and then worked as a librarian. She was married to Albert Sleper in 1928, andjoined him in the gas business at the DX gas station, driving the bulk gas truck and delivering fuel to farmers. In those years, the gas was delivered in five gallon containers and poured into 55 gallon barrels. Later she attendednursing school and following graduation whe worked for Drs. Feldick, Kroach and Moermond.

Albert and Ruby were active members of the Lions Club, with Albert receiving one of the highest honors in Iowa. Ruby is still a member of the Buffalo Center Lions Club and continues to support it in many ways.

Following Albert's death, Ruby continued living in the home they shared, where she enjoys a variety of card games and the many visits and phone calls from her friends and her brother, Merrill Harkness in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Buby's actual birthday was on February 26 and she celebrated with a delicious dinner in her home, followed by birthday cake and ice cream. The afternoon was spent playing cards.

"Ruby Sleper, 97

Ruby Sleper, 97, of Buffalo Center died Friday, April 6, 2007 at United Hospital in Blue Earth Minnesota. funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the First Reformed church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Beakeofficiating. Casketbearers wre Bob Steward, Gerald Hertzke, Douglas Penning, Alanson Stewart, Randy Winter and Robert Stewart. Interment was in Olena Mound Cemetery with the Winter Funeral Home of Buffalo Center in charge ofarrangements.

Ruby Irene Sleper was born on February 26, 1910 in Iowa City, Iowa. Her parents, A. R. and Eleanor (Seely) Harkness, also had a son, Merrill. She was baptized and confirmed at First Reformed church in Buffalo Center. She attendedBuffalo Center High School, graduating in 1928. On April 4, 1929, she married Albert Sleper in Algona. Ruby attended nursing school in Estherville and then went on to work at the hospital in Buffalo Center.

She is survived by her brother, Earl Barnes of Iowa City; her nieces and nephews, Susan Granucci of Albuquerque, NM, Loa Lu Waldroop of Alburquerque, NM, Alfo (Otto) Hertzke of Lakota; Lorraine (Robert) Stewart of Lakota; Gladys Coffin ofMilwaukee, WI; Loretta Thompson of Hastings, MN and Cecil (Laurene) Winter of Blue Earth, MN; special friend, Erika (Dennis) Knoner of Swea City; and a host of other friends and relatives. Ruby is preceded in death by her parents;husband, Albert; brother, Merrill Harkness, and a host of nieces and nephews." <>
