"Hi, thanks for the info - so hard to find much on Canadians, especially recently.

I have been checking obituaries in the Battle Creek newspapers. The papers are all digitized, but you have to search them at the library and they only give non-residents an hour for free. So If I'm in BC for lunch, etc; I spend an hourat the library. I have had good luck photographing them with my iPad and then transcribing them at home. I'm sending a couple to you- one is for Rexford Alwood (son of Lester, son of David William) who was killed when his car was hit bya train in Battle Creek. The other article I found when just doing a general search on Alwood; it is about Virginia Alwood (dau of Henry F, son of Charles); who eloped to Windsor and created a furor. I found the marriage on Ancestry;some of my comments are at the bottom.

"Battle Creek Enquirer and News 4 Aug 1933 Driver Blinded by Sun, Struck by Train, Kiled; Rexford Alwood, 49, Furnace Repairman, Meets Death at Reese Crossing; Is carried 1,400 feet; Light Truck Crushed Into Front of Locomotive; Wife Waited Supper for Him Hurrying to the home where his wife waited supper for him, Rexford L Alwood, 49, local furnace repairman, met death almost instantly about 7:05 pm Thursday when his Ford pickup truck at the Reese Rd crossing and carried a long distance. Mr Alwood's body was lifted from the wreckage of his demolished car more than 1,400 feet from where he was struck. Examination by Dr Willard Putman, coroner, revealed that practically every major bone in the man's body was broken. Police, sheriff's officers and Coroner Putman believe that Mr Alwood was blinded by the sun. At the time of the accident it was shining just above the tree tops in the west. The Reese road at the accident scene lies almost directly eastand west. Mr Alwood was driving west. The Reese road is also known as the "Upton avenue" road, being a continuation of Upton avenue from the point where the Camp road branches off onto Avenue A. The crossing is a short distance west ofthe junction with the Camp road. He was headed for his home at 250 N 32nd st. Apparently he had no knowledge that the train was approaching. There are no signal lights at the crossing. Although there were no witnesses to the accident, the smooth road surface in front ofthe crossing, officers believe, indicates Alwood, not seeing the train, made no attempt to stop. Engineer Edward E Haire of 22 Emerald told police he did not see the truck until the train struck it. He said he was traveling about 35 miles an hour. Conductor A E Basso of 9 North Ravine declared the train was not traveling that fast. The truck, a 1927 model, was struck about in the middle of the body and wrapped about the right hand side of the front of the engine. The engine, the type used for switching in the yards, did not have a cowcatcher. It was #2683, making anextra run with about a dozen loaded cars of freight between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. Coroner Putman decided this morning that no inquest would be held. He planned however, to confer with Asst Prosecutor Horace Mechem today on whether the railroad had a right to run a locomotive on a freight run without a cowcatcher. Hesaid that he did not believe this point would alter the situation. The train was brought to a stop about 700 feet west of the Forest st crossing.Mr Alwood was dead when the fireman and engineer reached his side. Police were called with the ambulance. Part of the wreckage had to be pried away from theman's body before he could be lifted free from it. Mr Alwood's wife, Bertha, was at home alone at the time the accident happened. Expecting him home from work at any moment, she had the evening meal prepared and waiting on the table.A neighbor who happened to drive by the accident sceneidentified Mr Alwood and notified his son-in-law Peter Owens who in turn notified the dead man's wife. Coroner Putman at the time of the crash was driving out Upton st and arrived at the scene within a minute or so after the ambulance. mr Alwood and his wife have lived in Battle Creek about 20 years, coming here from Sturgis. He was of late emptied as a repairman for the Homer Furnace Co. Before the accident yesterday, he installed one furnace and cleaned 2 others. Mr Alwood was born in Prairie Depot, OH on Feb 11 1884. Besides his wife he is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs Clara Owens and Mrs Margaret Anderson (possibly Andersen), both of Battle Creek; twin grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs John Gilfordof Detroit and Mrs Grace Chambers of Bowling Green, OH; 2 brothers, Lawrence of Grand Rapids and Harold of Battle Creek. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 from the Hebble chapel. The Rev Emma Burgess will conduct the services and burial will be made in Burlington."
