De jonge man Jacob Cornelis, die in de gemeente Barneveld was gaan wonen, werd in Ede ingeschreven voor de Nationale Militie, lichting 1865, en kreeg lotnummer 54. Hij was 1 el en 734 streek lang en had bruin haar en bruine ogen. Ondanks een geconstateerd gebrek aan de linkerhand werd hij op 10 mei 1865 werd hij ingelijfd in het 3e Regiment Infanterie waar hij diende tot 9 mei 1870. Toen hij met groot verlof was, ging hij op 17 december 1867 in Barneveld werken als molenaarsknecht. Eind november 1872 ging hij naar de gemeente Ede, maar keerde half mei 1873 weer terug naar Barneveld. Met een onderbreking van twee zomermaanden in 1874 bleef hij tot 19 december 1876 in Barneveld ingeschreven
In 1876 trouwde hij op 31-jarige leeftijd met zijn schoonzus Derkje Kampert en werd vervolgens met zijn vrouw op 19 december 1876 te Ede ingeschreven op Wekerom 4 onder Otterlo, waar hij eerst tuinarbeider was, maar in 1878 een bestaan had als landbouwer.
Op 5 januari 1906 compareerde hij in Lunteren bij notaris R. Dinger waar werd vastgelegd dat hij, Jacob Cornelis van Ojik, voor f 1970,= van Johannes Jan Jansen een huis te Ede had gekocht (akte 9).
Ze verhuisden naar Ede waar ze in hun huis op Cleefseweg 5 gingen wonen. Daar overleed Derkje op 69-jarige leeftijd. Zeven jaar later overleed Jacob Cornelis er op 80-jarige leeftijd.
