    Jan van Gilse, 1810-1859, werd in 1834 doopsgezind leraar te Koog-Zaandijk, in 1837 te Amsterdam en in 1849 hoogleraar aan het doopsgezind seminarium. Zijn eerste vrouw Jeannette Brester, drie jaar jonger dan hij, stierf aan de gevolgen van een miskraam op Tweede Kerstdag 1838.
