Notes about Gerrit Jan le Bruijn

Gerrit Jan le Bruijn (uit Sutphen) was in 1793 in dienst bij de kamer Amsterdam van de V.O.C. Hj vertrok als sergeant met het schip "Ceijlon" op 15 januari 1793 van Texel naar Ceijlon. Ze arriveerden op 11 april in Kaap de Goede Hoop en voeren op 6 mei verder naar Ceijlon, waar ze op 9 juli aankwamen.
Van het schip "Ceijlon" is nog een tweede reis bekend, n.l. op 23 januari 1795 van Batavia naar Setúbal in Portugal met een tussenstop in Kaap de Goede Hoop van 16 mei tot 7 juni. Aankomst in Setúbal op 31 oktober 1795. Gerrit Jan maakte deze reisniet meer mee, want hij nam na 593 dagen ontslag op zondag 31 augustus 1794. Tussen haakjes staat er achter Azië. Laatste vermelding.* Mogelijk is hij daar van boord gegaan en gebleven. Volgens zijn schuldbrief was hij ultimo augustus 1794 in Colombo. In ieder geval is dit het laatste dat van Gerrit Jan bekend is.
Het schip "Ceijlon" werd in 1795 door de V.O.C. verkocht.
* Er wordt geen reden gegeven voor het einde van het dienstverband; vaak is de rekening niet afgesloten. Ook als de ‘reden’ onduidelijk is, wordt ‘laatste vermelding’ gebruikt.
