Notes about John Goodby

On Friday, May 12, 1682, the sailing vessel Bilboa Merchant arrived off the South Carolina coast and entered Charleston harbor. Among the passengers on board was one John
Goodby, coming to America as the indentured servant of James Weetch. At that time, servitude was a widely-used method for obtaining passage to the American colonies, the period of indenture varying from four to seven years. When a servant was "out of his time" (i.e., having completed his term of servitude), he was free to undertake any business for which he felt qualified.

John Goodbyes date of birth is believed to have been 1655. His will verifies that he married a woman named Elizabeth (date Unknown), and we know they settled on a land grant in the nearby community of Goose Creek (parish of St. James', Berkeley).
