In het land van Maas en Peel, tussen Kessel en Venraij is de familienaam Gommans reeds vóór 1600 wijd verspreid.In opvallende concentraties echter hebben zich families met deze of soortgelijke namen in de regio Helden-Panningen neer gelaten.

Omstreeks 1630 wordt gestart met het registreren van de kerkelijke gegevens zoals doop, huwelijk en overlijden. De schrijfwijze varieert sterk omdat men schrijft naar het gehoor, waardoor de namen Gommans, Gommanz, Goemans, Goumans, Coumans, Coemans, Koemans en Gommers voor dezelfde familie kunnen voorkomen.

Er zijn twee verklaringen voor de naam Gommans,
1. Afkomstig van de voornaam Goue of Goude waarvan ook afstammen Goudemans en Goudeseume (OostFries);
2. Afkomstig van Gommarius of Gommanus,
