The following is a post-em by Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann AT yahoo.com:
Jim, it is doubtful that Barbara (to my knowledge = limited) was used inScotland at this time. That is not to say that it wasn't - it had tocome from somewhere - but onomastics makes it doubtful. I've notresearched enough to doubt your entry, it just sounds odd to me in thisperiod. Perhaps a celtic name is meant here. I'm not up on the variousceltic versions of things to say what it could be. Barbara,none-the-less I would think, is doubtful.
Sorry, I should have more definitive info but alas, Barbara is not a nameused in my family so I've not researched the etymology of it.
Regards,
Curt
Note: Barbara does sound like a modern name. However in a quick scan ofthe soc.genealogy.medieval I find it used quite often in Scotland, especially during the 15th and 16th centuries, but also prior to this. Inparticular I found a confirmation by Leo van de Pas that Robert Keith'smother was named Barbara de Seton. Probably the name was not "Barbara"as originally written in a charter, etc., but has been translated tomodern terms, as "Robertus" becomes "Robert", and "Wilhelmus" becomes"William"
Note: I found a source "Equus" in a post to SGM, which states that SirRobert Keith married a "daughter of Douglas". Equus states that Robertdied 1332 at the battle of Dulpin and was son of Sir Robert Keith andBarbara Seaton (Burke's Peerage, Scots Peerage, and many others statethat Robert's father was William m. Barbara de Seton). Equus did notname his sources for his statements so his statements may be somewhatquestionable.
